Sidewalks, Trails, and Paths Committee Projects
Chester Valley Trail Update
The following map was assembled by the Chester County Department of Parks and Recreation and represents the proposed alignment as of November 28, 2007. This alignment is contingent upon several factors, including landowner negotiations for purchase or easement. Therefore, it should not be considered as an absolute, final alignment for the Trail.

Sidewalk Stormwater Management Measures
The proposed sidewalk design will incorporate several innovative stormwater management measures (Best Management Practices [BMPs]) that are designed to manage stormwater runoff produced by the installation of the sidewalks, as well as manage some additional roadway runoff currently affecting the area. The proposed Stormwater BMPs will incorporate shallow infiltration trenches underneath the proposed sidewalk and in several vegetated curbed bump-out areas along the proposed sidewalk route. Additional storm sewer inlets will be placed along the roadway shoulder in coordination with underground piping throughout infiltration trenches, which will direct remaining stormwater to the existing storm sewer system.
Sidewalk Traffic Calming Measures
The proposed sidewalk design will incorporate a variety of measures that will allow for safer pedestrian travel, as well as aid in further control of vehicular traffic. Along the proposed sidewalk route, pedestrian crosswalks will be provided at each roadway crossing. Additional pedestrian crossing signage will be provided at crosswalk locations. In addition, two (2) Raised Pedestrian Crosswalks are proposed on Old Lancaster Road. One (1) Raised Crosswalk will be located in the vicinity of the existing T/E Middle School crosswalk, just to the east. The second Raised Crosswalk will be located in the vicinity of the Timothy School. The proposed Raised Crosswalks will function to provide better pedestrian visibility and slow traffic traveling through the school zones on Old Lancaster Road. In addition, the project is proposing to improve Conestoga Road between Irish Road and Old Lancaster Road to better define the roadway travel lanes, shoulders, signage, and lane striping. The improvements are aimed at controlling and calming traffic flow through the curve with the addition of the sidewalks. In addition, the Township and Consultant Team are investigating revisions to the existing PADOT School Zone Permits to further define and clarify the school zone limits throughout the entire Phase I Sidewalk Project area.
Future Sidewalks: Phase 2
The Township was awarded a Transportation Community Development Initiative (TDCI) grant by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission for the design of Phase 2 of the Township's Sidewalks Project. The grant was awarded in the amount of $100,000. Planning for Phase 2 is anticipated to begin in 2008.
