Professional Office
PROFESSIONAL OFFICE: office of a doctor, surgeon, osteopath, dentist or other practitioner of the healing arts for humans; or clergy, artist, architect, professional engineer, teacher, musician, lawyer, magistrate or similar member of a recognized profession who customarily has offices in the dwelling in which such person resides. Professional offices shall not include a real estate office, insurance office or other commercial office or use permitted only in commercial districts or a barbershop, beauty shop or hair stylist.
Each permitted professional office or studio shall satisfy the following requirements:
- Such office or studio shall be located in the dwelling in which the practitioner resides or within a building accessory thereto.
- Not more than one person shall be employed by the practitioner of the professional occupation, such as a nurse, secretary, clerk, professional or technical assistant, except that two individuals related by blood or marriage who are members of a recognized profession shall be permitted to practice together, each with one employee.
- The area used or the practice of a profession or for a studio shall not exceed the lesser of 600 square feet or 50% of the area of the first floor of the dwelling.
- No external alterations or additions inconsistent with the residential use or appearance of the dwelling shall be permitted.
