Sidewalks

Sidewalk Subcommittee

In March 2010, the Board of Supervisors appointed a subcommittee of representatives from the Board, Planning Commission, and Sidewalks, Trails and Paths Committee. They were charged with beginning a process to re-examine where the community wants and needs sidewalks, with a goal that the Board of Supervisors may adopt more formal policies and procedures to provide additional guidelines relative to design, development and construction of the sidewalks and paths in the Township.

The Sidewalk Subcommittee met monthly to review plans and ordinances related to walking and biking. They reviewed the "Green Routes Network", the pedestrian and bicycle network proposed in the Township's land use plan, and sidewalk requirements that apply to subdivisions and non-residential developments. To gather public input, the subcommittee conducted an online survey and held a public meeting.

Responsibility for Sidewalks

Curbs and sidewalks are the responsibility of the abutting property owner. This responsibility includes construction, maintenance and clearing of ice, snow and vegetation.

Clearing of snow and ice shall be in accordance with Township Code Section 177-12. The ordinance requires property owners to clear a 2 foot wide path within 30 hours after snow or sleet has stopped. If a fire hydrant is on the property, a path must be cleared to the hydrant.

Sidewalks shall be kept clear of obstructions. Overhanging vegetation shall be trimmed to keep the sidewalk clear. The horizontal clearance should be for the full width of the sidewalk and provide seven feet vertical clearance.

The sidewalk and stormwater construction around Conestoga High School and Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School is complete.
