Traffic Signs and Pavement Markings
Signs
The installation and maintenance of traffic signs (regulatory, advisory, warning, informational, etc.) is the responsibility of the Township on its roads. The justification and location of signs is directed by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/ which the Township follows. New sign installation requests are reviewed by the Traffic Committee. Traffic lines, crosswalks and intersection pavement markings are repainted on a yearly basis and some intersections have more permanent thermoplastic markings.
Signs on Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) http://www.dot.state.pa.us roadways are PennDOT's responsibility. Exceptions to this are speed limit signs of 35 MPH and below and signs required under a traffic signal permit are Township responsibility.
Due to the growth of vegetation over time, signs can become blocked rendering the sign useless and possibly creating a hazardous condition. It is the property owners responsibility to keep their vegetation trimmed to allow full visibility of traffic signs.
Pavement Markings
A schedule of line painting will be posted in the current events and projects section of the Public Works portion of the website.
All requests for installation and maintenance of signs or questions about traffic lines and markings should be directed to the Township at (610) 408-3620 or publicworks@tredyffrin.org or by letter to Department of Public Works at Tredyffrin Township, 1100 DuPortail Road, Berwyn, PA 19312.
