Tredyffrin Creeks
How many Creeks are there in the Township?
There are actually seven (7) named creeks running through the Township, but three are of primary concern:
- Valley Creek runs through the Great Valley to Valley Forge Park and on to the Schuylkill River.
- Trout Creek (with a number of tributaries) runs down the South Hills that border the Township.
- Crabby Creek that feeds into Little Valley Creek in Berwyn.
What do Creeks do?
Most serve principally as a habitat for wildlife within the watershed. In the case of Trout Creek, within the Township, it is the headwater of the Trout Creek system. The water source is primarily from runoff during the rainy season. Parts of the creek system support fish and natural habitat.
Why should I be concerned about the Creeks
There are a number of reasons:
- Creeks add to the natural beauty of the area (Valley Creek).
- Some creeks are the primary vehicle for stormwater runoff (Trout Creek).
- Some creeks have tended to cause more damage over the years as more impervious ground cover has been added (Trout Creek).
Are there any creek programs I should be aware of?
Absolutely!!!
The Valley Creek Restoration Program is the result of the PCB problems at the Paoli Rail Yard. There is a very active group in place today to support over $800,000.00 in PCB settlement funds to clean up and improve the creek watershed.
The new effort to work on Trout Creek started in 2004 by the EAC. An Association of interested citizens has been formed. In 2005, the first annual clean up of Trout Creek will be held and supported by the Township.
A revised Stormwater Ordinance will be written and enacted within the Township in 2005.
